PLATT TO STAY AT GUNNERS

Former England captain David Platt has turned down the chance to become Sheffield United's new boss because he doesn't want to quit Highbury and miss the excitement of Arsenal's Champions League campaign. The midfielder, who will be 32 on Wednesday, wants to stay and complete the remaining year of his contract even though he spent most of last season on the subs bench.
Platt, who was interviewed for the job at Bramall Lane earlier this week, commented: ''Although I was flattered that a club with such great potential as Sheffield United were interested in me, I contacted them yesterday and advised them I would be staying here for the foreseeable future.''
The Sheffield United job was the latest in a succession of managerial posts that Platt has been linked with. Last summer there was speculation that the midfielder would join Southampton, Reading or even a Japanese club, but on each occasion he opted to stay with the Gunners. ''Having won the UEFA Cup with Juventus and reached the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup with Sampdoria, I have to confess that the prospect of the Champions League now is very challenging, he said. I have a year left on my Arsenal contract and I am hopeful of moving into management when it finishes.''
Platt, who has made six transfers at a total cost of 22.15m during his career, made just 14 first team starts last season. Next season is likely to bring more of the same, particularly as manager Arsene Wenger is looking to add Dutchman Ronald de Boer to his already impressive midfield.

ASTON VILLA Manager John Gregory is adopting a sign or else' policy with goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, striker Julian Joachim and defenders Riccardo Scimeca and Gary Charles, all of whom have just 12 months left on their contracts. The Villa boss says: "I am giving each of them three options. The first two are; put pen to paper on a new contract, or go on the list and face being sold in the summer. The third is even more simple. If they are still here in August they will be playing for the reserves."

LIVERPOOL The painfully drawn-out transfer of Karlsruhe striker Sean Dundee has finally been completed. The South African-born German citizen has officially joined the Reds for 2m after the club received his international clearance from Germany. Dundee agreed personal terms and underwent a medical last week, but Liverpool had to wait until the formalities were completed. The move caused a storm in Germany, with Borussia Moenchengladbach claiming that the 25-year-old had agreed to join them. The transfer is something of a gamble as Dundee had a dreadful 1997-98 in which injuries restricted his appearances and he managed just three goals as Karlsruhe were relegated.

MANCHESTER UNITED Brian McClair has found himself in demand this summer having been given a free transfer by Alex Ferguson. The 34-year-old's former club Motherwell are hoping to bring him 'home' to the Scottish Premier but will face stiff competition from English clubs, including Barnsley. The Tykes are keen to get the former Scotland international involved in a player-coach role.

NEWCASTLE UNITED Alan Shearer will go head-to-head with World cup rival Alessandro Del Piero in a pre-season friendly on Tyneside. Newcastle have fixed up the match with Juventus on August 10, a week before the start of the new campaign. The match, which will see two of the world's greatest strikers in opposition, is Newcastle's only pre-season game at St James' Park.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST The club's youth team has returned with honour from a prestigious tournament in Holland. Seventeen of the City Ground's most promising youngsters took on some of the world's top teams, including Ajax, Benfica and Flamengo, and finished third out of 12. Forest youth director Reg Dove said: ''It was a tremendous effort from our boys against opposition of the highest standard.''

SOUTHAMPTON The Saints are hoping to move a step closer to gaining planning permission for their proposed move to a new stadium at Stoneham. Council representatives will meet next week to discuss the plans for a new 25,000-seat stadium which will form part of a 50m complex that will also include a multiplex cinema and shops. The club want to move to the stadium within two years but Eastleigh Council is unhappy about the proposed commercial development and cinema. Councillors look set to suggest changes to the present plans and may even propose a bigger stadium with a 32,000 capacity.

DIVISION ONE NEWS

QUEENS PARK RANGERS Manager Ray Harford is willing to listen to offers for his top stars as Rangers look to recoup some of the money they've spent on transfers over the last year. Harford said: "There isn't a large fund available to buy players. If we sell those that get the biggest transfer fees or earn the larger wages then we can balance the books, that is certainly the name of the game at this club." The first player to head out of Loftus Road is likely to be Nigel Quashie, with cash-aplenty Blackburn favourites to snap up the England under-21 midfielder.

STOCKPORT COUNTY Manager Gary Megson is poised to sign a three-year extension to his contract. The Edgeley Park boss said: ''In principle I would be pleased to sign. But a contract has to suit both parties - and we're not quite there yet.'' Chairman Brendan Elwood said: ''We really want to keep Gary - hopefully he will sign.''

WEST BROMWICH ALBION Striker Andy Hunt will make a decision on his future at the end of the month. Hunt has been offered a new deal, but has been in talks with a number of other interested clubs. The former Newcastle United marksman was Albion's joint-leading scorer last season with 14 goals.

DIVISION TWO

BOURNEMOUTH Chairman Trevor Watkins has promised that the signing of Frenchman Mohamed Berthe will not be the last new arrival of this summer. Watkins has told manager Mel Machin he is free to shop around for players to add to his squad as the Cherries look to mount a serious promotion challenge next season. He said: ''We are doing all we can to bring in as many as eight players over the summer. It is going to be a very busy couple of months.''

LUTON TOWN Manager Lennie Lawrence is urging midfielder David Oldfield to make his mind up about his future. The 30-year-old is out of contract and is believed to be considering an offer to join Northampton Town. Lawrence said: Northampton's fate has been decided, so really it should be sorted out. I want David to make his mind up.

MANCHESTER CITY Kit Symons has been given until the end of the month to sort out his future. The Welsh defender, whose contract runs out on June 30, has been offered a new deal but is keeping his options open. Symons has been linked with his old club Portsmouth and City boss Joe Royle said: ''We start training next month and I would like it all sorted out by then.''

NORTHAMPTON TOWN A tribunal looks set to settle the fee Northampton must pay Carlisle United for striker Allan Smart. Manager Ian Atkins has agreed a two-year deal with the 23-year-old who is out of contract at Brunton Park, and his arrival is likely to trigger the departure of another Northampton striker. Out of contract John Gayle looks certain to join Jason Dozzell and Jason Drysdale in quitting the Cobblers and is already believed to be talking to several other lower division clubs.

READING Manager Tommy Burns has been given a 500,000 boost after the Royals signed a new sponsorship agreement with brewers Courage. The deal - which includes Courage naming a new beer after the club called 'Royal' - will run for three years and will see Courage ales served in all the bars at Reading's new Madjeski Stadium. Chief executive Nigel Howe said: ''This is great news for the club and it marks the start of a new era with the move to a new stadium.''

DIVISION THREE

CHESTER CITY Manager Kevin Ratcliffe is on the lookout for a new captain for next season. Influential midfielder Shaun Reid is likely to be made club captain with someone else as team skipper. Ratcliffe said: ''We missed Shaun geeing up the lads last season but maybe another player needs the responsibility to improve their own game.''

AND FINALLY Third Division chairman breathed a heavy sigh of relief after a majority of Nationwide clubs backed the Football League's bid to prevent the formation of a possible breakaway League. At the Nationwide League's AGM, 62 of the League's 72 sides supported chairman David Sheepshanks and chief executive Richard Scudamore's plans for a re-organisation of the League's structure. That meeting was followed by a short EGM, where changes regarding the distribution of income and a new management structure were ratified. Clubs now have greater autonomy, with those in the First Division taking the lead role over negotiating commercial television rights. Three representatives from the First Division, two from the Second and one from the Third will sit on the new board, which will be headed by Scudamore and an independent chairman. Sheepshanks, who has spent the last 18 months trying to impose the plans, said: ''This at last enables the League to go forward as a cohesive and dynamic organisation. It's unprecedented to gain such overwhelming support and it lays to rest any further talk of warring factions or breakaways.''
